These two lightweight blanks dominate the fashion-forward segment of the market. We compare them across every spec that matters to decorators and small brands.
The Lightweight Blank Battle
In the lightweight, fashion-forward blank segment, two blanks show up in almost every serious discussion: the Next Level 3600 and the Bella Canvas 3001. Both are excellent. Both are used by real brands doing real volume. But they have meaningful differences that matter depending on what you're building.

Fabric Feel
Both shirts feel soft in hand, but the softness comes from different construction methods.
The BC3001 achieves its softness through combing and ring-spinning 100% cotton. You get a smooth, even surface that feels premium and drapes well. It's distinctly a cotton feel — familiar, natural.
The NL3600 achieves its softness through a CVC (chief value cotton) blend: 60% combed cotton and 40% polyester. The polyester content makes it feel slightly sleeker, less textured than 100% cotton. Some people love this; others find the slight synthetic feel less appealing than pure cotton.
Winner on feel: Draw — depends on preference. Cotton purists prefer BC3001. Those who want slick softness and less wrinkle-prone fabric prefer NL3600.
Print Performance
This is where the difference really matters for decorators.
Bella Canvas 3001
The 100% combed ring-spun surface is nearly ideal for screen printing, DTG, and heat transfer vinyl (HTV). Fine halftones land crisply. White ink on darks is vibrant. DTG results are exceptional, especially with proper pretreatment.
Next Level 3600
The poly content in the NL3600 creates a slightly different ink interaction. Plastisol inks print beautifully. DTG, however, can be tricky — poly-blend fabrics require more precise pretreatment and can produce slightly less vibrant results compared to 100% cotton, especially on colors. White ink DTG in particular can be less crisp on the NL3600.
Winner on print: BC3001, particularly for DTG and water-based inks.
Fit & Sizing
BC3001
Modern unisex fit that runs fairly true to size. The chest is slightly roomier than a fashion-fitted tee but not boxy. Works well for men and women. Body length is slightly longer than average.
NL3600
Slightly more relaxed than the BC3001 with a dropped shoulder. Still considered unisex but leans toward a more casual, relaxed silhouette. Very similar sizing, but try both if you're unsure — the subtle cut differences can matter for specific aesthetics.
Winner on fit: Tie — depends on your brand's silhouette preference.
Color Range
Bella Canvas wins this category decisively. With 100+ colors versus Next Level's 30+, BC3001 gives you far more palette options. For brands that need specific colorways or want to match seasonal trends precisely, Bella Canvas is the clear choice.
Winner on color: BC3001.
Shrinkage & Care
The NL3600's polyester content means it resists shrinkage significantly better than the BC3001. For customers who machine-wash and tumble-dry on high (which is most people, despite what the tag says), the NL3600 holds its size better over time.
The BC3001, being 100% cotton, will shrink somewhat. With cold wash and hang dry, you can minimize this. But real-world, it'll shrink more than the NL3600 after repeated wash cycles.
Winner on shrinkage: NL3600.
Price
Next Level 3600 consistently comes in at a lower price point per shirt than Bella Canvas 3001 — typically $1–2 less per shirt at similar quantities. For high-volume orders, that adds up fast.
Winner on price: NL3600.
